Why I became a Health Coach

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

My goal in becoming a Health Coach started out very simply as a desire to help others overcome eating and weight challenges similar to those I have experienced, but it has evolved into so much more!!

A little back story about me…

I have always been active and fit. In high school I was definitely one of ‘those girls’ that could eat whatever she wanted and not gain weight BUT I had some very dark issues with food, body image and self confidence that started when I was young.

I’m sure many of you out there can relate to these issues!

Fast forward to being a young adult and while I would say I didn’t “WORRY” about my weight, I made sure to work out and if I felt like I was getting a little too "big" I’d stop eating meals and the cycle continued! Indulge, shame, diet, intense exercise, deprive, over and over and over. The funny thing is I didn’t actually see this as a problem, I just thought this is what you do, food was both reward and punishment. I lived this way for soooo long! It wasn't until I got pregnant in my early 30s that I started to really think about how unhealthy this cycle was because, it wasn’t just about me anymore.

As I navigated being a new mom, learning to love this new version of my body, and trying to figure out what ‘healthy’ looked like for me, I threw myself into routines that I thought were good for me. I was exercising regularly, eating well (or so I thought) and trying to do all the things like most women I know. But I felt like SHIT…ALL THE TIME! I was tired, irritable, my weight was yo-yo-ing, I had weird breakouts, felt sluggish but couldn’t sleep, depressed, anxious, and honestly felt like I was going crazy most of the time! Sounds super fun, right???

Unbeknownst to me my body was working against itself. I was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease, Hashimoto’s, in 2016. This is a thyroid dysfunction that can cause you to go back and forth between symptoms of both hypo and hyperthyroidism!!!

Say what?!?! Yeah, so I finally had an answer… but holyshit it was like opening Pandora’s box! Because I am a person that LOVES to learn, I dove into research about this condition and went through a rollercoaster of emotions around what it means to deal with something FOREVER!! There was so much information and it was all overwhelming and confusing but something finally clicked… there is no one size fits all approach diet, fitness, and overall health!!

MIND BLOWN!

I started to view food as fuel and realized that not all calories are created equal. I have learned so much and continue to learn more everyday about how to take care of my WHOLE self! So much of what we are taught about health is backwards. We’re made to think it’s all external, that a diet can solve all of your body issues and when you fail (because let’s face it, most of us do) it’s because you didn’t have enough will power or determination. The reality is you have to undo YEARS of bad programming, in some cases, to get where you want to go. The good news is this, YOU are not a failure, YOU do have the capacity to change, YOU get to choose how you want to treat yourself inside and out and it all goes hand in hand! One of my favorite quotes about health is…

This is the work. The reason that fad diets and short-term fixes don’t work for most people is because you are treating the symptom and not the problem. So much of this work is done in YOUR MIND! I have done this work…I continue to do this work on myself and I am so damn excited that I get to help other people do it to!

Health is a journey, not a destination and I would be honored to be your guide! If you’re ready to make the shift for yourself and REALLY dig in, shoot me a message and let’s chat. Sometimes all you need to get where you want to go is a little help along the way ;)

XO
